Abstract
Lindgren and Turan operation was performed on 25 feet of 15 patients with hallux valgus. There were 4 males and 11 females. The mean age of the patients was 44.3 years ranging from 21 to 68. The majority of the patients presented with pain over the bunion. Preoperative radiological examination revealed the hallux valgus and first intermetatarsal angles to be 29.8 and 15.1 degrees respectively. No splint or plaster was used atter the operation. Atter an average follow up of 6 months (3-20) hallux valgus and first intermetatarsal angles were found to be 12. 7 and 7. 7 degrees respectively. Shortening of the first metatarsal was 3 9 %, and narrowing of the forefoot was 5.3 %. Stiffness of the first metatarsophalangeal joint was not observed. No cases of nonunion or of deep infection were encountered. According to the criteria of Bonney and Macnab results were assesed as 20 ( 80%) excellent, 4 (16 %) good, and 1 (4 %) poor. \nIt is concluded that Lindgren and Turan operation, with its technical simplicity, and relaxing effect on the taut, deforming sott tissues without surgical release of these structures, is an advisable and effective technique in the surgical correction of hallux valgus.
