Between 1989-1991 in Adana Military Hospital and between 1991-1994 in Taksim stade Hospital, distal metatarsal osteotomy was performed in 28 patients who had been diagnosed to have hallux valgus. Intraarticular lateral release and medial capsuloraphy were combined with the oblique metatarsal osteotomy in 18 patients if the hallux valgus angle was greater than 35 degrees. The mean age of the patients was 32.7 (20-48) and the mean follow-up was 32 months. While the preoperative hallux valgus angle and the intermetatarsal angle were 36 degrees and 14.2 degrees respectively, they were decreased to 10 degrees and 9.3 degrees postoperatively. Pa in, which was the most comman indicatian for the operation, disappeared in 97% of the patients and the cas me tic appearance of the hallux was good in all of the patients under the light of these findings, we think that distal metatarsal 30 degrees oblique osteotomy is not only an method of correcting the deformity in moderate hallux valgus, but alsa can easily be performed with a law complication rate in severe hallux valgus if combined with intraarticular lateral release and medial capsuloraphy.
