Abstract
In this study the results of 38 epiphyseal arrest operations performed on 33 cases were evaluated. These operations were done at the Ortnopedics and Traumatoiogy Clinic of İstanbul Faculty or Medicine, between 1965-1971. In 30 of these cases shortening of one lower extremity was caused by poliomyelitis paratysis, in 3 cases by other causes affecting the growth plate. Differences in the length of the legs veried between 2-9 cm. average of 6 cm. Correction of this inequality was attempted by the arrest of epiphyseal growth, after determining the bone age and studying the growth prediction. Blount staples were utilised in 16 of these operations and Phemister epiphysiodesis in other 22 operations. The results of these operations were studied separately and compared with critical analysis of the failures and complications. The better results were obtained after Phemister epiphysiodesis operations. More cases in this group reached to predicted correction with less complications.
